Litter awareness talk

Litter awareness talk

15 October 2025

THE scourge of litter is to be the subject of a talk in Killyleagh next month.

The talk will be given by Chris Scott, who hopes to highlight awareness of the issue.

The free event, entitled ‘Are you on community service? – The Great Litter Scourge’, will take place in the Bridge Community Centre on Thursday, November 6, from 7-8pm, supported by Killyleagh Community Association.

Chris has been collecting litter in the Killyleagh on a weekly basis for four years.

It was during an interview with a local community litter-picking group in Killyleagh in 2021 that he got hooked.

The idea for the title of the presentation, ‘Are you on community service?’, came from a question posed by a local woman who Chris met regularly when he was litter picking in the Shrigley area on Sunday mornings.

The talk will encompass Chris’s experiences and will look at a number of issues, including the effects of litter on the local environment.

There will also be a display of some samples of litter retrieved locally, including old crisp bags dating back to the 1970.

Chris will also be speaking to Downe U3A on Monday, November 25.

He has previously given talks about local history and has shared his passion as a newspaper columnist and as a trained tour guide.

He has also presented interview style programmes on local community radio and via podcast.

Any group of individual who would like to engage as a speaker can contact him at diggerarticle@outlook.com. There is no fee, but donations in lieu can be forwarded to the Marie Curie cancer charity.
