Liatroim U-14s storm past Bredagh to claim Shield

THERE was no denying the Liatroim Fontenoys their second underage camogie title at Darragh Cross on Saturday, but they had to come from behind to beat Bredagh as they lifted the Down U-14 Shield, which they now add to the U-16 trophy the club collected three weeks ago.

Dearbhaile Brentnall scored Bredagh’s 1-2, with her 14th-minute goal firing the South Belfast side into the lead.

Her sister, Nessa, and Faye Johnston also troubled the Fontenoys, while goalkeeper May Burns them in contention with a number of saves.

Liatroim opened up a lead in the second quarter and, although they only added a further two points before added time, they never looked likely to lose control of the game.

They too had a competent goalie, in Enya Clarke, while defenders Keva Connell, Emer Quinn, Kelly McAleenan and Laoise Owens, both midfielders and forwards Niamh O’Donnell, Lily O’Hare and Clara Doyle all caught the eye in a team performance that was built on hard graft.

Saorlaith McAleenan opened the scoring with the first of her five points from frees. Brentnall replied for Bredagh, but McAleenan returned the service with another free.

The Bredagh midfielder followed up with a point and a major, putting the South Belfast club 1-2 to 0-2 up.

It took a few minutes for Liatroim to hit back, but after a point from Méabh O’Higgins, they took control.

Doyle found the net in the 21st minute and O’Hare added a second five minutes later, before McAleenan completed the first half scoring from a free, giving her side an interval lead of 2-5 to 1-2.

While scoring dried up after the break, with both defences on top, McAleenan eventually added two points from frees.

A late point from O’Donnell rubber stamped the result, before substitute Gráinne Owens rounded off the scoring with a stoppage time goal.
