Ladies football refs help cancer event

LADIES football referees have been doing their bit to help raise money for two local cancer charities.

Around 25 whistlers took part in last month’s Team 100k Challenge which was in aid of the Cancer Fund for Children, which runs the Daisy Lodge facility in Newcastle, and the Southern Area Hospice in Newry.

The event was staged in memory of Siobhan McCann, the popular Clanvaraghan woman and Down lady footballer, who died from cancer last May at the age of 26.

Lady footballers from 21 clubs across Down took part in the challenge and they were joined by the referees who were only glad to take part.

Francis Morgan, Down Ladies fixtures secretary, described the turnout as “fantastic.”

“I am very pleased at the turnout for what was an excellent cause,” he said. “Everyone taking part had to run or walk five kilometres.

“As well as supporting the charities, it was an excellent way of keeping us all together and active as a group during the lockdown.”
