Killops leads home charge at Killyleagh

1 August 2012

WITH a fine, sunny morning deteriorating into a changeable afternoon with multiple heavy rain showers and squally winds, Killyleagh Yacht Club’s annual regatta proved to be a tough test for some, and unfortunately there were several retirements, including some forced due to damage.

In a repeat of last year, Killyleagh’s Raymond Killops and his crew on Movistar Bleu won IRC1 with Dermot Hinds’ Hindsight II in second place and Ernie Kelly’s What’s The Rush II in third.

Meanwhile, other home boats finished in the top three but just missed the prize.

In the Squibs, David Hanna’s Blue gave way to Warren Cannon’s Nimrod, while Andrew McCleery’s Flying Fifteen, Too Fast and Furious, followed Roger Chamberlain’s The Final Resort over the line from a fleet of eleven boats in that class.

KYC’s Cheval de Mer finished third in the PY1 class, just behind Rock ’n’ Goose and the winner, Magdaleyne, sailed by Frank Petticrew from the neighbouring East Down club.

In IRC2, the honours were taken by Quoile sailor Jonathan Gifford’s Apache, which finished ahead of Stuart Cranston’s new rocket ship, Fifty Shades.

While the weather may have temporarily dampened spirits the day still made for some competitive racing, with around 100 boats taking part in 15 classes, including the dinghy handicaps where Wayfarer Hart-Beat was victorious on the main course and on the junior course Robbie Gilmore claimed first place in the Topper 4.2 class.
