Injured walker is airlifted from the Mournes to safety

30 July 2025

THE Mourne Mountain Rescue Team has issued a reminder to people who get into difficulty in the mountains what to do in an emergency.

The reminder comes after rescue team volunteers went to the assistance of a walker on Thursday afternoon of last who sustained a minor but debilitating leg injury on Doan.

After locating, assessing and treating the casualty for their injury, the team called in the Prestwick-based Rescue 199 helicopter for assistance.

Once airlifted, the injured walker was transferred to Donard Park back to other rescue team members for further care, with the remaining members of the casualty’s party accompanied back by our first response.

A total of 12  rescue team members responded with grateful assistance from ARCC, Rescue 199, and local Coastguard who secured our landing site in Donard Park.

The rescue team says anyone who finds themselves in need of assistance in the Mourne Mountains, should always dial 999 and ask for the police or mountain rescue.

Volunteers say when the initial 999 call is complete, it is “absolutely essential” to keep your phone free so that a rescue

coordinator can call you back to confirm/expand on information.

The rescue team added: “If we experience delays getting back to you or getting critical information, our response can be delayed.”
