A CALL has been made for improvement work to be carried out at Donard Park in Newcastle.
Local Sinn Féin councillor Willie Clarke wants Newry, Mourne and Down Council to implement a series of measure to manage and maintain the area.
Councillor Clarke says the area “urgently requires” the creation of a pathway through the vegetation, replacement of rotten bollards, maintenance of the entrance access, and cutting of the hedge on to Shanslieve Drive.
He also emphasised the necessity of implementing a regular maintenance schedule to ensure the green space is well managed.
“This area serves as the main entrance to Donard Wood and the Mourne Mountains, making it a crucial gateway for both locals and visitors,” he said.
“While the provision of green space is vital for people, wildlife, and the environment, especially in urban areas, it is equally important that these spaces are maintained to a high standard.
“The council needs to redouble its efforts to foster a rich diversity of wildflowers, providing food for insects and birds, and creating a network of habitats for all wildlife.
“Additionally, ensuring pathways are created and maintained in the upper green area of Donard Park is essential.”
Cllr Clarke has confirmed that he will be requesting a meeting with council officers responsible for outdoor spaces to discuss the issues and push for the necessary improvements.
