Hopes for return of Newcastle bandstand

Hopes for return of Newcastle bandstand

TWO leading agencies have been urged to work in harmony to pave the way for Newcastle’s historic bandstand to be returned to the resort.

The bandstand – which adorned the promenade for generations – was moved to Saintfield’s Rowallane Garden.

Now South Down MP Chris Hazzard wants Newry, Mourne and Down Council to work in tandem with the National Trust and hopes they can strike the right note to pave the way for the bandstand to return to Newcastle.

The MP believes the return of the bandstand would help restore what he described as the resort’s “unique heritage”.

“First erected over a century ago, the bandstand holds fond memories for generations of local families in Newcastle,” he continued.

“It’s clear from talking to people in Newcastle, they would like to see the bandstand returned, providing a unique location for a range of events throughout the year. “

Mr Hazzard said the resort is privileged to have some special, built and natural heritage such as the outdoor Rock Pool, harbour, and Donard Forest and that the restoration and enhancement of these would be a great addition to the town.

He confirmed he has written to local authority chief executive Marie Ward and the National Trust’s NI director outlining his proposal.

Mr Hazzard hopes to bring discussions with both parties to the next stage early in the New Year.
