THE High School in Ballynahinch has doubled its enrolment in just five years.
From a low point of having just 157 pupils and concerns over its future, the school now has 380 students and is oversubscribed.
Addressing the school’s annual prize distribution last November, the principal, Mr Paul Marks, said exam results were the best ever and well above the Northern Ireland average.
Last week, Mr Marks welcomed former Education Minister Michelle Mclveen and local councillor Callum Bowsie to the school.
The DUP politicians were also greeted by Mr Reg McGowan, chairman of the board of governors.
Cllr Bowsie, a past pupil at the school, described the visit as “very constructive”.
He said: “Not only was it encouraging to hear about the growth in the school’s mainstream classes but also the exceptional work of its communication resource centre for pupils with special needs.
“We discussed a wide range of issues facing the school in the short and long term. Some of these issues stem from the growth of the school itself, and Michelle and I will continue to work to support the school on these issues.”
He added: “Last week’s visit was the first time back in my old school since leaving as a pupil. It was slightly strange being in the principal’s office to hear good news."
