THE work of health professionals across adult service provision has been welcomed by South Down MLA Colin McGrath.
He met recently with senior South Eastern Trust officials Margaret O’Kane, Lyn Preece and Patsy McManus to discuss the work they are engaged in and the challenges they face.
Praising the unseen work that goes on across the organisation, Mr McGrath said he has been working closely with the carers sector since he was appointed the SDLP’s health spokesman.
He said the work that goes on across the adult services sector in particular can be taken for granted, explaining the fact there are around 220,000 unpaid carers across the country at present, the care that can be provided is “essential and since the emergence of Covid has taken on a new importance”.
Mr McGrath said: “It is evident the work that goes on within our adult services directorate can often be like that of careers, as it goes unseen quite often.
“Not only this, but it provides an invaluable service to carers who are able to receive an assessment of what their needs are as well. With 10 centres across the heath trust area serving over 500 people on a daily basis, this work is complex, and something which cannot take for granted.”
Mr McGrath said it was “heartening” to learn about the work that is going on in prison settings, and has been for some time, to ensure those who have offended, particularly young people, do not do so upon their release.
The MLA added: “There is so much good work going on within our health trusts that very often we do not see. While there are many challenges for everyone to meet, I believe that through this process of working together we will ensure we get the best health outcomes and end our health inequalities.”
