QUOILE Yacht Club hosted the first of the summer’s regattas on Strangford Lough on Saturday.
Approximately 60 boats went to the starting line and enjoyed challenging courses set by race officer Vicky Magowan ands her race team.
The racing was a close, but there were some familiar faces on the podium at the end of the day.
The big boat class was won by Mike Spence’s Le Basculer, from Killyleagh, while in the highly competitive Impala class, Peter Thompson’s Alcyone took the honours ahead of his East Down clubmates, John Patterson and James Curran.
The smaller cruiser class won by David McIlveen’s Rampart, from Strangford Lough
Yacht, ahead of Backchat, owned by the Ashe, Crichton and Hanlon syndicate from
Quoile Yacht Club, and Digit, a new acquisition for Barry Bridges and his son, Oliver, from Killyleagh.
The Glen class prize went to husband-and-wife team John and Heather Gilmore, while Andrew McCleery and Colin Dougan, from Killyleagh, won the Flying Fifteen class.
At the prize giving club commodore Jeff Baker thanked the competitors for supporting the event, which was sponsored by Cognisense.
Unfortunately, the Gore’s Island Race, which was due to be held the following day, had to be postponed owing to strong winds. It will be held at a later date.
