Funeral to take place of Newcastle woman (25)

19 October 2022

THE funeral of a young Newcastle woman who died last week will take place in Down Cathedral this Saturday.

Lucy Grainger, who was 25, passed away on Thursday.

Many tributes have been paid to Lucy, who was a former chairperson of the Northern Ireland Youth Forum.

She was also a winner of the Northern Ireland HSBC UK Breakthrough award at The Prince’s Trust Awards in 2018.

Friends took to social media to pay their own tributes, with many describing her as “beautiful” and “inspiring”.

The Northern Ireland Youth Forum said on Friday that it had learned of Lucy’s death “with great sadness, heavy hearts and deepest of sympathy”.

The Forum said Lucy was a participant in its programmes over a number of years and “brought so much light, passion and inspiration to NIYF when she walked in our doors, with an amazing smile and infectious laugh”.

It said she “flourished in her roles within NIYF developing amazing relationships with her peers and staff during her time with us”.

The Forum said Lucy “will always be remembered and never will be forgotten here at NIYF” and was sure that “this devastating news” will be felt across other youth and community organisations with which Lucy was engaged.

It added: “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again.”

A best friend of Lucy described her as a “a truly beautiful person” and said she had been left “heartbroken”.

She added: ”Lucy, you were family, and I will forever hold a piece of you in my heart.”

Lucy is survived by her mother, Florence, brother Glenn, grandmother Marie-Therese and the family circle in Northern Ireland and France. She was predeceased by her father, Brian.

The funeral service will take place in Down Cathedral on Saturday at 11am.
