STORMONT Fisheries Minister Andrew Muir has heard at first hand the level of economic and financial issues facing the local fishing industry.
He met recently with South Down MLA Cathy Mason and industry representatives Harry Wick, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Fish Producers’ Association and Brian Chambers from the Anglo Northern Ireland Fish Producers Association.
Mrs Mason said she was pleased to meet with Mr Muir and the fishing industry representatives to discuss support and sustainability for the sector.
“This was an important opportunity for Minister Muir to hear first hand the scale of the economic and financial problems being endured by the sector,” she said.
“Fishermen and other marine businesses are facing serious financial pressures due to transit visa issues, labour shortages, and capacity. They deserve to be fully supported, kept informed and reassured by the government department.”
Mrs Mason said she welcomed the fisheries minister’s commitment to continued engagement and to delivering a long-term plan and investment into the fisheries sector in South Down.
She added: “I will continue to work with the minister and all parties to ensure DAERA engages with local businesses in Ardglass, Kilkeel and Portavogie to ensure these plans meet the needs of the sector.”
