Eoghan wants us All Wrapped Up for Xmas

17 December 2014

A YOUNG Drumaroad boy is urging people to raise money for a major cancer charity by cosying up in a Christmas jumper.

Eoghan Doyle received huge support from the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC) when he was ill and now he is backing the charity’s All Wrapped Up campaign.

The NICFC is urging people to embrace the Christmas spirit and leave their shirts and ties in the wardrobe in favour of their cosiest, cheesiest Christmas jumpers.

The charity is hoping that people will sign up and hold an All Wrapped Up day with friends and family and get sponsorship for wearing their Christmas jumpers. Collection buckets can also be provided to advertise the event and enable people to collect money during the day.

When Eoghan was ill he and his family spent time in Daisy Lodge, the NICFC respite centre in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains. His mum said it was a very therapeutic sanctuary.

Mrs. Georgina McKee said: “During Eoghan’s cancer journey, we enjoyed a therapeutic short break. It was like a sanctuary, a safe haven, away from the gruelling routine of hospital.

“We got chatting with others, and gained a lot from meeting families who understood the challenges and fears, of nursing a child with cancer. The staff were amazing and looked after us so well. The food was delicious; it was like eating out every night.

“People don’t realise how much a place like that is needed, until it helps them,” she added.

A spokesman for the charity said by wrapping up in a Christmas jumper, people will help the charity deliver their range of, “wraparound” specialist services for local children suffering with cancer, from the point of diagnosis and treatment through to recovery or sadly, in some cases, bereavement.

Natasha Walsh explained: “We are there at every stage of the cancer journey. We offer financial grants, one-to-one support and therapeutic short breaks. This December, with your help, we can continue to be there.”
