A DOWNPATRICK chartered civil engineer, Carol Andrews, has been awarded membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
Carol, who works for Arup in Belfast, was thrilled to achieve her ambition of becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer and was presented with her membership certificate by ICE President, Geoff French at a recent admission ceremony held at the ICE headquarters in Westminster in London.
Carol explained she was inspired to become a civil engineer after watching a documentary on the Hoover Dam at a young age.
“I have a clear memory of watching that show on television and being in awe of the scale and complexity of the project and wondering if I could be involved in designing and constructing new infrastructure to shape a better world,” Carol revealed.
“My career highlight has been working on the A8 Larne dual carriageway scheme for the past six years. It’s currently the biggest infrastructure scheme in the country and I’ve been involved with it from the beginning. It’s very satisfying to see it progress to where it is,” she added.
Richard Kirk, ICE Northern Ireland regional director, said civil engineering was at the heart of society.
“It’s all about shaping, improving and protecting the infrastructure that we all depend on in our day-to-day lives, from bridges, roads and railways right through to energy networks and water and waste infrastructure,” he said.
Mr. Kirk added: “Achieving chartered civil engineer status is a significant personal and career achievement and we welcome Carol into the ICE.”
