Dundrum rowers take the honours in keenly contested club regatta

30 September 2015

THE first Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Club Regatta has been held at the town’s yacht club.

Skiff clubs from the villages of Kircubbin, Portaferry, Strangford, Dundrum, Killyleagh and Donaghadee took part at the weekend with their hand built skiffs.

Following the recent Strangford Lough and Lecale Partnership and PSNI skiff building initiative, organisers have reported a growing interest in rowing locally.

Most clubs have also now expanded to include a junior section.

The Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Club Regatta was officially opened by councillors William Walker and Terry Andrews. The race officer was David Young, Pete Burns provided the safety boat and Dougie Marr plotted the course.

The first race was the Town Rock Challenge, an endurance race over 5.3 kilometres which was followed by five one-kilometre sprint races.

The overall winner of the Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Club (CRC) Perpetual Trophy was Dundrum CRC, in second place was Strangford CRC and third place went to Killyleagh CRC.

The perpetual trophy was crafted by David Patterson and the trophies were sourced and designed by Anne Miskelly.

Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Club has extended thanks to Killyleagh Yacht Club for providing club facilities and to everyone who took part and watched the event.
