PUPILS at Dundrum’s Sacred Heart Primary School are heading to Westminster.

They are off to the Houses of Parliament after winning the regional heat of the Westminster Make IT Happy competition which focuses on internet safety.

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie paid a visit to the Dundrum school on Monday morning to meet pupils and staff before they headed off for London.

Miss Ritchie wrote to all primary schools across the constituency inviting them to enter the competition and was delighted Sacred Heart was crowned the Northern Ireland regional winner.

She explained the competition focuses on internet safety, with pupils asked to create graphics that explain the importance of internet safety for young people.

“This competition was a great learning tool for local pupils and also provided teachers with useful resources that can be used educating our young people about the dangers of the internet and why their safety is paramount,” explained the MP. “This is great news for the Dundrum school and the children who took part.”

Miss Ritchie said during their visit to Westminster, the Sacred Heart pupils will receive their prize, enjoy a tour of Westminster and a trip on the London Eye.

The MP added: “The competition judges were very impressed with the entry from Sacred Heart and also by the very high standard of entrants from other primary schools throughout South Down.

“The competition has been running for seven years and I look forward to next year’s round and further opportunities for our local primary schools.”
