DUNDRUM Cricket Club women’s first team advanced to the semi-final of the Challenge Plate after a comprehensive 109 run win against Holywood seconds on Sunday.
Dundrum travelled to Seapark Holywood in high spirts after beating Holywood firsts in the previous round.
However, the team knew they needed to be on top form against a young well coached Holywood team. Dundrum captain Jen Shilliday won the toss and elected to bat first.
Dundrum opened the batting with Laila Juuldam and Jen Shilliday.
The two openers got off to a good start adding a patient 56 runs inside the first ten overs.
Holywood made scoring difficult, bowling good line and length in the opening overs combined with good fielding.
Laila Juuldam began to attack the bowling, playing aggressive shots either side of the wicket eventually retiring on 32 not out. Shilliday was joined by Anna Dawson and the pair added a further 50 runs for the next wicket.
Both batters began to put pressure on the Holywood bowlers to accelerate the scoring rate.
Shilliday was eventually dismissed off the bowling of Isabella Wray for an excellent 25. Joscelyn Wright joined Dawson with three overs remaining and Dundrum on 104 for one.
Dundrum attacked in the final overs to eventually finish on 125 for one from their 20 overs.
Dawson finished on 21 and Wright finishing on 11. The pick of the Holywood bowlers was Isabella Wray who finished with one for nine from their three overs. Dundrum knew they would need to bowl well in the second half in order to win the game.
However, what followed was one the best bowling displays seen by any Dundrum team.
Joscelyn Wight and Niamh Lowry opened the bowling and began by taking eight wickets between them in six fantastic overs of opening bowling.
Wright bowled three overs taking four wickets for only six runs. Lowry bowled three overs taking four wickets for ten runs.
Dundrum’s fielding was also exceptional with fantastic catches from Anna Dawson and Erin Busby along with two run outs.
Dundrum never allowed Holywood to settle, eventually bowling them out for 16 in a devastating spell of six overs leaving Dundrum winners by 109 runs.
Dundrum advance to the semi-finals of the Challenge Plate on July 23.
