ROADS officials have been asked to address a speeding issue at the Middle Tollymore Road in Newcastle.
Speed limits in an area which contains a number of homes have been described by South Down MLA Colin McGrath as “confusing and dangerous”.
He said residents are increasingly alarmed at the speed of some drivers, explaining a 30mph zone doubles to a 60mph limit in the middle of a built up area.
The Assemblyman said anyone who travels along this road will know how “nonsensical” the current set up is.
He explained: “You begin in a 30mph zone, suddenly enter a national speed limit zone of 60mph, and then as you leave Middle Tollymore Road to head to the Bryansford Road, the limit s again to 40mph which is inconsistent, confusing and potentially dangerous.”
And Mr McGrath warned that with more housing being developed along this stretch of road, retaining a 60mph zone is no longer appropriate or safe.
“This road is becoming increasingly residential and yet it still includes a stretch where cars can legally travel at 60mph. That is simply not safe, especially for families, walkers and cyclists using the area,” he continued.
Mr McGrath confirmed he has written to the Department for Infrastructure to request a review of the current speed limits, calling for the 60mph section to be reduced to 40mph in line with the Bryansford Road.
“I believe this is a reasonable and measured change that would vastly improve safety for all road users. The Department needs to act before someone is seriously injured or worse,” he added.
