DOWNPATRICK seconds fell just 25 runs short of their target of 221 at the Mall in Armagh on Saturday.
Armagh thirds batted first in the 30-over encounter and amassed a considerable total under very good batting conditions.
Jacob Vinod impressed with the ball on his debut, returning figures of 2 for 21 off his allotted six overs. John McGrath also bowled well, but with little reward. Harish, Sam Magowan and Max Whittaker picked up a wicket each and Armagh closed on 220 for 5.
Downpatrick’s reply started positively, despite losing Harish early on. Vinod joined Gavin Ringland and the two brought the total to 92 after just nine overs, before Ringland departed for 20.
Samuel McEvoy (1) was bowled shortly thereafter, but Magowan joined Vinod and together, they dispatched the Armagh bowling to all parts of the Mall.
Magown departed in the 19th over, returning a very well constructed 34 and leaving the score sitting at 166.
Armagh eventually managed to unseat Vinod (78) in the 22nd over, leaving Downpatrick requiring 41 runs off 8 overs to win.
Whilst Shreyas Varadacher (15) batted well, some tight bowling and fielding from Armagh choked the flow of runs and Downpatrick were all out in the 29th over, 25 runs short.
