MEMBERS of the Downe u3A Science Group recently visited the Ulster Aviation Society’s base near Lisburn.
While it was a scorching hot day outside, the interior of the Society’s hangars is always colder than outside, making it a nice temperature for the tour.
All work and management of the Society, which is a registered educational charity, is carried by volunteers, one of whom, Ricky Coulter, gave the group a fascinating tour lasting almost two hours.
He began with the history of the two hangars which were constructed to build Stirling bombers in World War Two and are now listed buildings which puts a lot of restrictions on what the Society can do with them.
The visitors then had a brief look at engines, ejection seats and survival gear for aircrew, before it was on to the aircraft and helicopters including the new Tornado GR4 exhibit which has had its engines removed as part of the restoration process.
All in all, it was a fascinating tour, even for those who are not particularly interested in aircraft and aviation.
Downe u3a has a wide programme of summer events for members, including visits to the National Gallery in Dublin, to Newgrange and to Finnebrogue Artisan outside Downpatrick.
In addition, there have been bus trips with guides around Newry Canal and to Kilkeel harbour, plus guided walks round local places such as Ardglass, Killough, Castlewellan, Comber and Portaferry.
All this is in addition to ongoing group activities including gardening, table tennis and the strollers.
For information on how to join Downe u3a, which costs £14 per year, telephone 07367 122765.
