Down on receiving end against Cavan

29 July 2015

BRAVE Down were no match for a much stronger Cavan outfit in a one-sided All-Ireland preliminary round qualifier at Clones on Saturday.

This time last year Down were on a journey which would end in glory with an  All-Ireland Intermediate Championship at Croke Park.

The step up to senior grade and the loss of key players across the side has proven to be too much for the Mourne girls.

Despite the massive margin at the finish, they did not give up and were a credit to their county.

By half time, with Cavan leading by 5-14 to 0-1, the writing was painfully on the wall. wDown’s only score of the half came from Kate McKay.

When the scoreboard at Clones was unable to go beyond nine goals, three points had to be added to Cavan’s points tally. Aisling Doonan scored 3-8 of Cavan’s total and player of the match award winner Roisin O’Keefe contributed eight points.

Natalie McKibbin and Cushla Savage scored points for Down in the second half.
