DOWN High’s first XV played Foyle and Londonderry College in the first round of the group stages of the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup at home on Saturday and won the game by 21-12.

Fionn Carey, Ryan Connolly and Joe Dougherty scored the Down High School tries with Rhodri Phillips adding three successful conversions.

The Foyle College points came through a first half try from James McKillop which was converted by Adam Killeen.

The remaining Foyle College points were scored by Christopher Boyd when he touched down for an unconverted try in the second half.

Down’s next game is against Belfast High School away, before playing Strabane Academy at home.

In other games against Foyle College: Medallion XV won 33-31, U-14 XV lost 31-11 and the U-13 XV won 48-10.

Meanwhile Down High were delighted to welcome Dr Ciara Gallagher of Mullan Gallagher Dental Care into the school last week to present new playing shirts for this season to their Medallion rugby squad.

“We are really pleased to have the opportunity to sponsor the Down High Medallion team this year,” said Dr Gallagher.

“Seeing our logo on their shirts gives us a real sense of pride in our community.

The team have made a cracking start to their campaign and I look forward to celebrating more wins as the season progresses.”

Head of PE at the school, Josh Pentland, said: ‘We are delighted to have Mullan Gallagher on board as main sponsor of our Medallion side this year.

“We always appreciate the support of local companies and in this case many of our students have availed of Mullan Gallagher’s high quality gum shields over the years, so they were a natural partner for us.”
