DOWN County Museum has been awarded coveted Museum Accreditation status by the Northern Ireland Museums Council.

This recognition places the museum alongside the best in the UK and Ireland for professional standards, excellence in collections care and outstanding public service.

The accreditation certificate was recently presented by Communities Minister Gordon Lyons.

Dr Kris Reid, museum curator, said accreditation was a “significant recognition of the hard work and dedication” of the museum’s team.

“It demonstrates that Down County Museum operates to the highest national standards and that we are committed to preserving and sharing our rich heritage for future generations,” he remarked.

“Above all else, we are a museum for the people of Newry, Mourne and Down Council and we endeavour to serve the community to the highest standard.”

This means that Down County Museum and Newry and Mourne Museum, which are both run by Newry, Mourne and Down Council, are accredited under the UK-wide scheme.

Council chairperson, Philip Campbell said it was a “proud moment” for the district.

“With both of our museums nationally accredited, residents and visitors alike can be assured they are experiencing heritage attractions that meet the highest standards,” he said.

“Our museums play a vital role in telling the story of our people and place and this recognition is a tribute to the dedicated staff and volunteers who bring that history to life every day.”
