Dawn launches debut novel

16 March 2022

THE debut novel by a local children’s writer is already one of the top selling books in its age category on Amazon.

Felicity Flipflops is the work of Dawn Gelston, a teacher living in Dubai but who has strong links with Drumaness and Teconnaught.

She is the daughter of Paul and Maura Gelston and sister to Shona, Aisling, Janine and Paul.

Aimed at children aged 8 to 12 years old, the book tells the story of mental well-being, adventure, and friendship by a young girl named Felicity.

Dawn explained: “As teachers, we encourage children to believe in themselves and to work hard and dream big. The book is funny and heart-warming, underpinned with elements of emotional well-being for children — something which is so important.

“I hope that children, and their families, read and enjoy the book and understand that we should be ourselves and it’s OK to be a little bit different.”

Her love and respect for home has inspired her first book as she has dedicated it to her primary school teacher, the late Leo Flanagan, former principal of Christ the King Primary School, Drumaness, and St Patrick’s Primary School, Ballynahinch.

“Mr Flanagan was a one-of-a-kind teacher and a very inspirational leader. He taught me confidence, how to believe in myself, and encouraged me to do what I love. Even thirty years after I have left primary school, he’s had a huge impact on me and given me the courage to go for it.”

Dawn plans to be home in a few weeks’ time and is hoping to visit as many schools as possible to share her book with local pupils.

The book has already made it to number two and number four in some best selling categories on Amazon and is receiving rave reviews online.

She said: “I am overwhelmed by the amount of support I have received from my friends, family, and the local community, and want to thank everyone for their well wishes.

“I hope you enjoy getting to know Felicity Flopflops, as much as I have enjoyed creating the character and writing her story.”

Felicity Flipflops costs £6.99 in paperback or £3.19 for the kindle edition on Amazon.
