THE DUP has co-opted Yvonne Moore on to Newry, Mourne and Down Council.

Her appointment was confirmed yesterday and she will represent the Rowallane area and replace former councillor Billy Walker who has formally resigned from the party.

Mr Walker (60) is facing charges of attempted sexual communication with a child and is due back in court early next month.

Ms Moore (52), who works for Strangford MP Jim Shannon in his constituency offices in Ballynahinch and Newtownards, grew up in Killinchy and was educated at the village primary school and Comber High School.

The mother of three has lived in Killyleagh for two decades and worked for Mr Shannon as a benefits advisor, specialising in meetings with vulnerable and elderly people.

The party describes her as someone with a compassionate nature and people skills which have helped hundreds of people over the years and is determined to be a passionate voice for the Rowallane area.

The new councillor said her passion is helping others and is honoured to be co-opted to the local authority as a DUP councillor.

“I look forward to working with the sitting councillors in my party, whom I know well and have worked with closely over a number of years, as we serve our constituents throughout our council area,” Ms Moore added.

DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has congratulated Ms Moore on her co-option.

“I wish Yvonne well in this new role,” he said. “She joins a strong and growing DUP team in Newry, Mourne and Down Council. I know Yvonne has a strong track record in helping people of the area and has been already working hard in representing their needs.”

The party leader added: “Her passion for people is incredible and she will be a tireless worker.”

Mr Shannon said he has worked closely with Yvonne for 12 years, describing her as “hardworking, compassionate and someone who has a heart of gold.

Strangford MLA Harry Harvey has extended his best wishes to Ms Moore.
