Crossgar roadworks to start for mains gas pipe

WORK is due to start shortly to bring mains gas to Crossgar.

Phoenix Gas has confirmed contractors will be working for 16 weeks in the village to lay a new mains pipe with the work carried it in two stages.

Minor work has already been completed at a number of housing developments in the village, including Kilwood Park and Ranoche Close, to ready them for mains gas, with work on the main contract due to start on Monday, February 12.

During the first stage of the contract, a mains gas pipe will be laid from the mini roundabout  through the centre of the village along Downpatrick Street to just beyond the Drakesbridge Road junction at the Downpatrick Road.

Phase two will see a mains pipeline laid from the entrance to the Lissara Close housing development on the Saintfield Road towards the mini roundabout in the centre of the village, along Killyleagh Street and out beyond new homes being built adjacent to the Whytefield estate on the Killyleagh Road.

Phoenix estimates work on each phase will take eight weeks to complete, depending on ground conditions, with temporary traffic lights in operation in the centre of Crossgar, with two-way traffic maintained on the periphery of the village.

The company insists any work required at key junctions will be carried out at weekends and that the planned construction programme in the village has been agreed with local traders and other bodies following meetings with Phoenix representatives.

Rowallane councillor Terry Andrews has appealed to people to be patient as work begins to bring mains gas to Crossgar, confirming Phoenix will be doing all it can to minimise disruption.

“The company is investing a significant amount of money to bring mains gas to homes and businesses across East Down,” he said.

“Work is well underway in Downpatrick and Ballynahinch, with the company also aiming to provide mains gas to other towns and villages over the coming years as it expands its network.”
