Cormac is flying high after lifting top English title

ARDGLASS golfer Cormac Sharvin is hoping to walk in the footsteps of world number one Rory McIlroy and play in the Walker Cup.

The Stirling University student enhanced his claim for a place in the Great Britain and Ireland team when he won the English men’s open stroke-play title for the Brabazon Trophy at Nottingham at the weekend.

The 22-year-old star has been prominent in stroke-play events in Scotland, Wales and Ireland this summer and became only the third Irishman to lift the coveted title.

Sharvin, who had put himself in pole position with a stunning five under par 67 on Friday to take the lead, finished with a solid 70 for a 72-hole aggregate of seven under par 281.

That total gave him a one-stroke victory over fellow Irishman and Walker Cup player Gavin Moynihan.

Sharvin carded four birdies on the outward half and just one on the homeward stretch but seven pars to finish were sufficient for him to edge home.

The victory should almost certainly cement Sharvin’s place in the Walker Cup side to face the Americans at Royal Lytham and St. Annes in September.

“I have been pretty consistent all season apart from a hiccup at the Amateur and it is great to win this big one, a tournament every amateur international targets,” Sharvin said afterwards.

“It means the world to get over the line. I have given myself so many chances this year and it’s great to get it done.”. “You need to get a bit of luck.

“The back nine is tricky and I holed a lot of good putts under pressure,” added Sharvin, who arrived at Hollinwell with a new putter and new putting technique after being dissatisfied with his performance at the Amateur Championship.
