Concern over new changes to boundaries

5 July 2023

SAUL, Strangford, Dunsford, Ballyhornan and Kilclief are to move from the South Down parliamentary constituency into Strangford.

The move has been confirmed by the Boundary Commission but has been criticised by South Down MLA Colin McGrath who is concerned for voters in the Lecale area.

Mr McGrath said the review of parliamentary boundaries has been a “difficult one to navigate” and while admitting there is certainly nothing new in this process and given the growth of South Down in recent years, it was evident there would see a number of changes to parliamentary boundaries.

“I have made several representations on the process to defend Downpatrick and Lecale to remain within South Down but, unfortunately for many people, the Boundary Commission has decided to press ahead with its decision.

“I want to express my concern for the people of Saul, Strangford, Dunsford, Ballyhornan and Kilclief and further who will soon find themselves in the Strangford constituency.”

Mr McGrath said the “very fundamental principle of democracy” is that people have their voice heard and represented in government.

He said that will now mean people in these areas having to go to Ballynahinch, Newtownards or Comber for their MLA or MP.

“This will be a period of significant change for the public in these areas,” Mr McGrath declared.

“I will continue to represent them as their MLA for as long as possible but I want to reassure them that while they will soon be a part of Strangford constituency, the SDLP will be there for them, as it always has.”
