A COMBER student has won a prestigious youth leadership competition.

Erin Watkins (16), a sixth form student at Glenlola Collegiate in Bangor, won the Rotary Club of Donaghadee final recently, in which seven students from Glenlola and Regent House Grammar School in Newtownards took part.

Erin will now progress to the zone final in this year’s Rotary youth leadership development competition.

The competition, which is one of Rotary Ireland’s longest running youth projects, rewards young people with clear leadership potential.

It is run in conjunction with the EU Parliament Office in Dublin and Euroscola in Strasbourg.

Erin impressed the judges with her understanding and knowledge of leadership and current affairs, as well as with her articulate and fluent presentation.

The zone final will be hosted by Bangor Rotary Club on November 20 where Erin will compete with other winners from Bangor, Comber and North Down.

The winner will enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to Strasbourg, Belfast and Dublin with fellow winners from around the island of Ireland.

Donaghadee Rotary Club president David Cochrane congratulated Erin on her achievement and praised all the students who had entered this year’s competition.

He said: “The enthusiasm of all the participants and the standard of presentations was very high and great credit is due to all entrants for putting in the time and effort to enter this competition.

“We hope everyone enjoyed the experience and benefited from taking part. We extend very best wishes to Erin in the zone final.”
