NEWRY, Mourne and Down Council chairman Michael Savage has thanked people who have helped make the district such a special place to live, work in and visit this year.
In his Christmas message, the chairman said when he became first citizen in June he spoke about “hope and ambition through growth” as the theme for his year in office.
Cllr Savage said he has had the privilege of seeing at first hand the many charitable, community and voluntary organisations working across the district to improve the quality of life for many citizens.
He said whether it’s providing new community facilities, supporting the elderly to reduce isolation or keeping people safe, “there is a warm, generous and compassionate spirit evident” in many of the people he meets.
“It has been my honour to support and shine a light on their work, particularly in such difficult times,” the chairman continued.
“Now, more than ever, we need to provide hope, as we work together all year round to support the many families and individuals facing personal and financial hardship and challenges on a daily basis.”
The chairman said the local authority’s work involves supporting community organisations, through financial assistance schemes and delivering vital funds on the ground, but also through major regeneration plans designed to deliver new growth and prosperity for generations to come.
He continued: “We are excited about the decade of opportunity ahead, supported through funding from the Belfast Region City Deal, enabling us to deliver ambitious, transformational projects.
“We are committed to regenerating our city of Newry, towns and villages which will act as a catalyst to create and sustain new jobs and increase visitors to our area.”
The council chairman said he had the “honour” of visiting many local businesses and recognises the true entrepreneurial spirit evident within the business community.
“We will continue to empower and foster ambitious entrepreneurs and nurture our local small businesses to help them to succeed,” he continued.
“We will continue to provide opportunities for business development within our district through local and international investment and cross-border initiatives and will proudly support our young people to enable them to access work by providing support and local opportunities.”
Councillor Savage said the local authority will also continue to create “epic events” that support the growth of tourism, whilst protecting the area’s natural heritage.
“I am only too aware of the many challenges that lie ahead in 2023 but I do have hope having witnessed the determination and generosity of the people in this district time and time again,” he continued.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to those that will be working over the Christmas holiday period and those who give their time to help the homeless.”
The council chairman added: “ As we prepare to welcome 2023, on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down Council, I would like to wish each and everyone a Happy Christmas and a New Year in which we continue to generate ‘hope, growth and ambition’ together.”
