A DOWNPATRICK farm is set to open its gates to the public over the Father’s Day weekend next month.
From Friday, June 14, to Sunday, June 16, Castlescreen Farm will be one of 19 farms province-wide engaging in the Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend.
At Castlescreen Farm, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to meet their indigenous pedigree Dexter cattle – one of the smallest breeds of cattle in the world – pedigree Highland cattle, various breeds of sheep, miniature donkeys and yoga goats. There will also be farm walks, a play area and lots of other activities.
The Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend is designed to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities, providing an opportunity for people to gain insight into the agricultural sector, witness first-hand the origins of their food and appreciate the labour put into delivering the food to consumers.
The initiative is led by the Ulster Farmers’ Union and is expected to attract up to 15,000 visitors across all 19 farms in Northern Ireland.
William Irvine, UFU president and Bank of Ireland Open Farm weekend chairman, said:
“The event will see participation from 19 diverse farms, each offering a unique experience and insight into different aspects of agriculture.
“Visitors can explore the rich tapestry of Northern Ireland’s farming heritage, gaining a better understanding of the food production process and meet the farmer that works 365 days a year to deliver delicious food from farm to fork.”
