Carrick leads Red High to Barry Cup glee

ST. Patrick’s Grammar School, Downpatrick, won the Peader Barry Sevens trophy in Kilkeel last week for the first time since 1994.

The Red High fielded two squads with the B team unlucky to lose out to Abbey, St. Mark’s and Bessbrook before exiting at the group stages.

The A team started with a big win over Knock, a draw against St. Malachy’s, Castlewellan and another big win over Bessbrook’s B team.

On to the quarter-final and a really tough game was won against St. Louis’, Ballymena, 3-3 to 1-6 with late scores getting the side through.

They then played St. Colman’s in the semi-final, and were pushed all the way to win 2-6 to 1-8.

Into the showpiece final and it was a meeting with East Down neighbours St. Malachy’s, from Castlewellan.

A titanic tussle ensued and highly rated Castlewellan held the lead for most of the game. With two minutes remaining and three points down, Matthew Carrick made an unbelievable save to deny Castlewellan a killer goal and spark the Red High onto one final push.

With just 30 seconds left and down by one point, Caolan Boyle lashed the ball to the net to win it for the Red High. A great end to an entertaining day of football.

Captain Matthew Carrick picked up the player of the tournament award.
