Carol secures Lady Captain’s Day at Ardglass

2 August 2023

THE weather forecast for Teresa McAteer’s Lady Captain’s Day at Ardglass was dire, but except for the strong wind, there was just one heavy shower.

The scores returned reflected the strength of the wind, but from the raising of the club flag in the morning with the club captain Kieran McMahon and president Peter Stewart until late at night the ladies had a great day.

A total of 78 Ardglass ladies entered the shotgun start competition and they were joined by visiting friends and colleagues of the lady captain. The lady captains of Downpatrick and Spa were warmly welcomed.

After an excellent meal and before the presentation of prizes, Kathleen King read her annual poem about Teresa and her antics over the years. Una McMullan and Freda Sharvin performed a sketch entitled ‘Dance Hall Days’, which raised peals of laughter.

The main part of the proceedings was the presentation of prizes. The winner of the lady captain’s prize for 2023 was a relatively new member, Carol Magee, with 34 points. The runner-up was Deirdre Hanna, with 32 points, followed in third place by Doreen Chambers on 30 points.

The best gross prize went to the ever consistent Catherine Kelly, with 21 gross points.

Anne McCreanor secured the front nine prize with 18 points and Brenda Arthurs claimed the back nine, also with 18 points.

Category prizes: Paddy Ann Moore, 30 pts; Kathleen King, 30 pts; Jennifer Cultra, 46 pts.

The longest drive at the 16th hole was hit by Oonagh McClure who also collected the past captains’ prize with 36pts.

Team captains’ prize: Margaret MacNabb, 28 pts. Committee prize: Heather Duff, 30 pts.

Nearest the pin prizes: (2nd) Jennifer Cultra, (5th and 7th) Kathleen King, (10th) Heather Duff, (12th) Oonagh McClure.

Nearest the pin in two shots at the 18th: Noreen Savage.

Lady captain’s sisters prize: Jacqueline Gracey, 27 pts.

Guests prize: 1st Fiona Gray (lady captain of St Patrick’s, Downpatrick), 29 pts; 2nd Geraldine Mageean, 28 pts; 3rd Angela Casey, 28 pts.

The lady captain provided prizes for 39 male guests, the winner being David Hunter on 40 pts, hotly pursued by Eugene Mageean on 39 pts.

Local performer Cora Kelly provided the musical entertainment throughout the evening. The lady captain thanked all those who had made her day so special, not least all the competitors who had braved the tough conditions, and congratulated all the winners.

Club captain Kieran McMahon congratulated the lady captain on a very successful day and wished her well for the rest of her year.
