Cara spinning her way to Ireland glory

7 February 2018

A BALLYNAHINCH teenager is spinning her cricketing magic in Zimbabwe.

Seventeen year-old Cara Murray, who is rated among the top three  best spinners in Ireland, plays for Waringstown Ladies.

She made her senior international debut last week on a 14-day tour which finishes on St Valentine’s Day.

Unfortunately, her debut ended on a sour note as Ireland lost their tour opener to Zimbabwe in a rain-affected contest in Harare.

The talented all-rounder, who has also played for Saintfield alongside her dad Philip and brother Ross, showed her batting prowess with an unbeaten 14 as Ireland recovered from a disastrous start recovering from 99 for 7 to post 173.

She shared an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 74 in just 68 balls, but two rain interruptions meant a DLS adjusted target of 140 in 33 overs for Zimbabwe, which offered little trouble for the hosts in a seven-wicket win.

Ireland bounced back in the second of three 50 over games at the weekend and Cara chipped in with an economical spell of one wicket for 24 runs off 10 overs in a 12 run victory.

The series decider, which was to have been played yesterday, was rained off.

Cara and her team-mates now have a few days off before the start of the T20 Series on Thursday.
