Cancer charity cycle from Lough Neagh to Strangford Lough

14 August 2019

ACTION Cancer is calling on cycling enthusiasts young and old from across Northern Ireland to come together and cycle 50 miles from Lough Neagh to Strangford Lough.

The Lough2Lough Cycle is on Sunday, September 15, and starts at 9.30am from Greenmount Campus, Antrim. Proceeds will go to Action Cancer’s prevention, detection and support services.

Taking mainly ‘B’ roads and minor roads, the route passes through pretty country scenery, villages and small towns, including Hillsborough where there will be a refreshment stop to ensure that participants are well fuelled for the final push to the finish point at Strangford Lough Yacht Club.

There will be a complimentary buffet available for participants at the finish point and free return transport to the start point if required.

The challenge will be led by Latitude Events’ experienced team, including first aid support and on route mechanics, ensuring a safe and enjoyable day out for all.

Patrick O’Neill, Managing Director of Latitude Events, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Action Cancer to deliver the Lough2Lough Cycle.

“The event offers a fresh, new challenge for those interested in getting active while raising money for a great cause.

“Whether you want to test your own limits, challenge your colleagues to an active team-building event or simply gather friends and family for a fun day out, we are confident that the Lough2Lough Cycle offers something for everyone and we encourage everyone to get involved and register for this fantastic event.”

Speaking on behalf of Action Cancer, Lynn Sanderson, Treks & Activities Executive commented: “The Lough2Lough Cycle offers a great opportunity for people of all ages throughout Northern Ireland to put their pedal power to the test to raise vital funds for Action Cancer, Northern Ireland’s leading local cancer charity.

“The cost to register is £50 per person and we are asking participants to raise £250 in sponsorship which goes directly to the provision of Action Cancer’s prevention, detection and support services.

“We can’t guarantee good weather on the day but we can guarantee that every penny raised by event participants will help in Action Cancer’s mission of saving lives and supporting local people affected by cancer.”

Every year Action Cancer provides a range of cancer detection, prevention and support services across Northern Ireland which costs £4m annually to fund. The unique breast screening service delivered by Action Cancer is available to women aged 40-49 and over 70 who fall outside the NHS screening range (50-70).

The local charity provides therapeutic support in the form of counselling and complementary therapy to those living with cancer or supporting a loved one with their diagnosis which is available to both adults and children from age five.

A peer mentoring service is also available for people dealing with their diagnosis. Other therapeutic support services include acupuncture, scar therapy, physiotherapy, yoga and pilates, one-to-one and group life coaching and educational events.

Action Cancer works closely with schools throughout the province to deliver a health promotion programme, raising awareness of how to minimise the risk of cancer through practical health and lifestyle choices and M.O.T. health checks.

The health promotion programme, M.O.T health checks and breast screening services are made available to everyone at Action Cancer House in Belfast and regionally in selected venues across the country or on the Action Cancer Big Bus, which is supported by Supervalu and its independent retailers.
