Bugsy Malone at Assumption

Bugsy Malone at Assumption

26 October 2022

THE Roaring Twenties are brought back to life as Assumption Grammar School stages the musical extravaganza Bugsy Malone this week.

The music-filled comic caper opens tonight at 7pm and continues on Thursday and Friday at the same time.

The show is set in the back streets of New York during America’s Prohibition era when the city was heavily influenced by gangsters.

Follow the story of Bugsy, a slick, one-time boxer and loveable rascal who is drafted in as a last resort to help out Fat Sam Stacetto, owner of the Grand Slam Speakeasy.

Together, the pair battle against the latest mobster and Sam’s deadly rival — Dandy Dan — whose gang has been terrorising the district, taking out all who have betrayed him in the past!

However, Fat Sam’s chips may have already been cashed in because Dandy Dan has control over the deadly ‘splurge guns’.

Determined to get his hands on the newest weapons, Bugsy acquires the help of his newest friend, Leroy Smith, a humble guy with one hell of an awesome punch.

After witnessing a secret meeting, the twosome form a plan to steal the infamous splurge guns from Dock 17, in the hope of turning the latest gangland warfare back in Sam’s favour.

But with so many flour bombs, custard pies and whipped cream flying about, will their plan ever work?

To make life even more difficult for Bugsy, he is desperately trying to woo Blousey Brown, the speakeasy’s newest singer and wannabe movie star. He promises to take her to Hollywood after earning 200 bucks from Fat Sam, but something goes horribly wrong — as it always does.

hrow into the mix an old flame, now Fat Sam’s Mrs and Queen of the Jazz Age, Talullah, who still holds a torch for Bugsy. Will Bugsy stay out of trouble long enough to avoid being taken into ‘custard-y?’

The production is written by Assumption Year 10 pupils Lauren Sidebottom, Ruby Scott, Faith Lundy, Sadhbh O’Hara and Sinead Higgins.
