Boardmills WI tribute to late member

11 September 2024

THERE was a plenty to celebrate at Boardmills Women’s Institute’s recent meeting.

The ladies paid tribute to May Fox, an esteemed member who died last March, a few weeks before her 100th birthday.

Many of her family and friends joined the Boardmills ladies to hear June Kirkpatrick speak about May’s life from the time she first joined the Institute in 1953, when she rode her bicycle to meetings, and how she was still an active member right up until her death.

May represented the Institute at many international meetings from 1953 until 1996 and was awarded her Gold Spinning Wheel in 1997.

She meticulously catalogued all her WI activities and the audience had a chance to look through some of her memorabilia at the meeting.

Brenda Richardson, WI Northern Ireland Federation chair and Rowallane executive member, chaired the AGM and then presenting the Institute awards for crafts, floral art, cookery, bowling, quizzing and general competitions.

A new committee was elected and ideas for the year ahead were considered – 2025 will be the 75th anniversary of the formation of Boardmills WI.

Boardmills WI meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in Temple Golf Club.

On October 3, the guest speaker is Marytn Todd, who will talk about ‘The Lives of Jimmy and Helen Todd’.

The competition is ‘The Biggest Conker’, and new members as well as former members are all welcome to participate.
