Spa WI
THE ladies of Spa Women’s Institute have once again showcased its exceptional creativity and community spirit by securing a remarkable victory in the prestigious Northern Ireland Women’s Institute scrapbook competition.
This achievement not only highlights the dedication and talent within the group but also fills the entire Spa community with immense pride.
Spa WI first made waves in the competition in 2024 under the leadership of Linda Dornan, current president, and Sandra Sommerville, earning an impressive hat-trick of awards in the novice class.
Their accolades included the coveted Carryduff Cup for Best Overall Submission and both Crystal Cups – one for Best Front Cover and another for Best Single Page.
Building on this success, the group was elevated to the open class in 2025, a category often dominated by seasoned veterans.
Undeterred, the Spa WI scrapbookers, this time led by Valerie Robinson, embarked on a journey of meticulous planning and intricate craftsmanship.
They poured hours of dedication into creating a scrapbook that beautifully chronicled Spa WI’s events from September 2023 to June 2024.
Their hard work and ingenuity paid off as they emerged victorious again, securing the Warringstown Cup and claiming the title of overall champions.
The announcement at the Northern Ireland Women’s Institute AGM, held at the Europa Hotel, was met with sheer elation. Judges praised their submission as “a clear winner from start to finish,” commending its interactive features, innovative use of textures, and dazzling creativity.
A special mention goes to Valerie Robinson, whose outstanding talent earned her this year’s Crystal Cup for Best Overall Front Cover.
Her design, entitled Captured Memories, featured a uniquely crafted and hand-sewn camera with a rotational gadget which revealed a photograph of all the Spa WI members.
Adding to its charm, her artistic sketch of the meeting hall was creatively depicted “in lights” and included an invitation to tea, complete with real teabags and sugar.
Judges described her work as “totally different and brilliantly engaging”.
Additionally, congratulations go to Wynne Heron and Alison Abernethy, who secured a well-deserved third place for their January page. Their contribution added an extra layer of creativity and polish to a scrapbook already bursting with originality and flair.
A spokesperson said: “This victory serves as a testament to the teamwork, dedication, and artistic talent within Spa WI.
“The entire community eagerly anticipates their future endeavours. Will they take a well-earned breather, or are new ideas already in the works for next year’s competition? One thing is certain: Ballynahinch will be cheering them on every step of the way.”
Beyond their artistic achievements, Spa WI remains a vibrant and active part of the local community.
With over 100 members, the group participates in various initiatives and events, strengthening the social fabric of the town.
This year’s triumph is a celebration of dedication, artistry, and community spirit. The Spa W.I. scrapbookers continue to inspire, leaving a legacy of excellence that will be remembered for years to come.
As part of their continued engagement, they will be hosting the official Women’s Institute VE Day 2025 Orange and Ginger Cake display and competition in collaboration with Ballynahinch Royal British Legion branch. Those interested in participating are encouraged to reach out to their local W.I. for further details.
