A LOCAL man who has performed at some of the most high-profile events across the UK has released his debut album.
Barry Owen, originally from Ballynahinch, recorded the country album with acclaimed music producer Brian Kerrigan in Harmony Recording Studios, Letterkenny, Co Donegal.
His first single, ‘Some Days I Can’t Do Right For Doing Wrong’ as well as his latest single ‘Stand Up In The Crowd’ have been hits around the world, with radio play in the UK, US and Canada.
Barry’s musical journey began when he moved to London to study violin at the renowned London College of Music, after playing the instrument at the youth orchestra in Ballynahinch as a teenager.
“After my studies I started teaching violin in schools, but I realised that I preferred performing,” he said.
In London, Barry became a member of The Chance Band, a prestigious society band known for performing at exclusive events, including parties for the Royal family and other high-society gatherings.
“We performed for Charles and Diana, and the late Queen at the Cowes Week Regatta on the Isle of Wight,” he recalled.
“One of the most memorable events we sang at was the businessman John Charles Bamford’s birthday party. He had elephants and Cool and the Gang performed – we had to follow Cool and the Gang.”
The Co Down man also gained international recognition representing Ireland in various song contests abroad, which he said other countries take “very seriously”.
Barry now leads The Barry Owen Band – one of the top go-to groups for corporate events and weddings across London and the UK.
“We do a mixture of songs, from the 60s to the modern day. Luckily, people always dance to our songs so we get rebooked,” he said.
In recent times, Barry was encouraged to develop his songwriting after getting a positive reaction to some of his earlier songs which were played on UK radio.
“I sing Irish country music, music people can dance to. It’s in my blood and seemed natural,” he explained.
“I’ve written enough songs for two albums. I’m very happy with how things are going – onwards and upwards.”
You can stream Barry’s latest single, ‘Stand Up In The Crowd’ from his new album on Spotify and other digital platforms now.
Barry’s album was released on Saturday with launch events in counties Donegal and Down and another single release coming soon.
