THE Patrician Youth Centre in  Downpatrick has just finished a successful six-week summer programme.

Starting on July 1, the scheme attracted a registration of 430 children and young people aged 4-18.

Working in partnership with two local primary schools, Our Lady and St Patrick Primary School and St Colmcille’s Primary School for part of the programme, the centre delivered events both onsite and offsite including at the Ballymote Sports and Wellbeing Centre.

Activities included sports coaching and input for one week by Table Tennis Ulster, teaching attendees the rudiments of the sport.

Drama, creative arts, cookery, multi sports and games were delivered daily.

Teenagers enjoyed Young Leaders and Summer Vibes programmes, and trips to Newcastle, Belfast, Bangor, Dundonald and Strangford Activity Centre.

Youth Advisory members also enjoyed a night in Ardboyne Hotel, Navan, and a visit to Emerald Park.

A daily feature was food cooked and served at the end of sessions, including fresh produce grown onsite.

Attendees were the recipients of produce very kindly donated by local factory Finnebrogue Artisan, with which the Patrician have a longstanding relationship.

The burgers, sausages and nitrate-free bacon and ham provided much nourishment at the end of the day.

The Youth Advisory Group had the opportunity to visit Finnebrogue during July, with their counterparts from Portadown, Limavady and Carrickfergus.

They had a tour, saw the production line, had lunch and received donations of produce for their families, all of which was truly appreciated.

Summertime at the Patrician is always fun-packed and a highlight of the annual programme. Staff wish to thank their members, their families and their funders, all of whom contribute to their success.

Yvonne Maguire, senior youth worker said: “Our summer programme delivery continues to provide fun and enjoyment for many children and young people in Downpatrick during the holiday period, and we are delighted to be able to maintain our service and support at a time when costs are spiralling and beyond the reach of many.

“We look forward to our members returning in September for our new term programme.”
