DOWNPATRICK Primary School has said a fond farewell to one of its longest-serving members of staff.
Mrs Cheryl McClure has retired after 21 years as the P4 teacher in the school.
She was a learning area leader and co-ordinated a wide range of subject areas over the years, including World Around Us, art, STEM as well as music.
She was also the deputy designated teacher for child protection in the school for the past 19 years and was part of the school’s safeguarding team.
At a special assembly, Mrs Elsie Storey, chair of governors, presented Mrs McClure with a gift from the governors and she also received gifts from parents and staff to mark her retirement.
Mrs McClure spoke warmly to the children about her time at Downpatrick Primary School.
Mr Niall Stevenson, principal, said: “Cheryl has been a wonderful teacher and colleague to have in our school.
“She has been there for the children and staff through all the years with her kind, caring nature and always with a word of encouragement when it has been needed.”
Mr Stevenson continued: “She would think deeply about things and you could rely on her absolutely to perform her role with skill and dedication.
“She is looking forward to plenty of traveling with her husband, Mike, and we were delighted that he was at the assembly to hear all the wonderful plaudits for Cheryl.”
