Young Irish speakers have a terrific time at summer scheme

6 August 2014

THE Lecale Gaelic Society’s annual summer scheme continues to enjoy success.

Based at the St. Michael’s Centre in Downpatrick, almost 80 Irish-speaking children, ranging in age from four to 15, registered for the two-week course and were able to avail of an extensive array of activities.

They included trips to Castlewellan Forest Park, Strangford Lough, Delamont Country Park, Funky Monkeys, Happy Town, Lisburn Leisureplex, the Ulster Museum, Down Leisure Centre and the Down County Museum.

There were also a variety of workshops including, music, dance, cookery, drumming, arts and crafts.

The summer scheme was open to children from the local Naíscoileanna (Irish language nurseries), Bunscoil (Our Lady and St. Patrick PS), as well as past pupils of the Bunscoil and all other children fluent in Irish. The children were split into three groups according to age so that all activities were age appropriate.

The Lecale Gaelic Society wishes to thank Down Council for its continued financial support for the summer scheme which caters for Irish speaking children across the district.

The Society also wishes to thank Foras na Gaeilge and the South Eastern Education and Library Board for providing additional funding due an to ever increasing number of participants on the scheme.

The Lecale Gaelic Society has also thanked parents for their continued support and appreciation and staff for their professionalism and care of the children.
