World darts titans heading for Downpatrick challenge

14 May 2014

TWO of the best professional darts players on the planet will collide in weekend-long event in Downpatrick in September.

World number one Michael Van Gerwen will do battle with his Dutch compatriot and five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld at Super Saturday Sunday in association with Down Hire Centre Ltd, which will take place at Downpatrick Cricket Club over the weekend of September 27 and 28.

Tickets, priced at £25 for the Gold option and £40 for VIP, are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Downpatrick Cricket Club on 028 44612869 or by contacting John or Audrey on 07783 407597 or 07708 617144.

The VIP ticket option includes a meet and greet with the players, waitress service and entry into the draw to take on the professionals.

Fans will also be given the chance to win a car in an exclusive bull’s-eye challenge. Details will be revealed at the event.

van Gerwen is the latest star of the sport, having clinched his maiden World Championship title at the age of just 24 last December, while van Barneveld is an all-time great and still a top player.

And Barney, as he is known to his adoring army of fans around the world, is out to prove that he’s still got what it takes to be number one.

“This is a great event for me to play in,” said van Barneveld.

“It gives me a chance to spend all weekend playing against the man who is currently the best in the world and a chance for me to show that I am still up there too.

“We are great friends be we leave that behind when we go on stage and we will both be desperate to win both days. We never like to lose but the local players always provide a threat too and one of them could be driving away in a new car so that is a great incentive.”
