Work starts on new Dundrum footpaths

13 February 2013

WORK is underway on a £270,000 scheme to provide new walking routes in Dundrum.

The project is part of the Mourne Coastal and Down Walking routes initiative and is scheduled to be completed at the end of April.

New paths are being created adjacent to the GAA pitch in the village, linking the Main Street car park with the National Trust cottages, while a new pedestrian link from the inner bay car park to the Newcastle Road along a former railway line includes the provision of a new pedestrian bridge.

New signage is also to be provided at various locations across the village and an infant play area is being constructed at the inner bay car park.

The project has been welcomed by councillor Patrick Clarke who said the scheme is being funded by the Down Rural Area Partnership and Tourist Board.

He said other proposed work at the inner bay includes new paths, drainage, fencing, minor tree works, safety surfacing, signage and street furniture.

Councillor Clarke said the work in the village also includes an extension to the existing A2 Dundrum Road footpath linking the walking route to Dundrum.

“The upgrade and provision of a walking route, new play area and signage will help further promote Dundrum as a tourist destination and walking centre,” he said.

“The investment will provide improved facilities and signage for walkers and tourists and ensure people stay longer in Dundrum.”

Councillor Clarke said the scale of the investment and the proposed work in Dundrum is great news for the village.
