Whale washed ashore at St John's Point

AN eight-metre long Minke whale has washed ashore at St John’s Point in County Down.

The huge whale, which it is believed has been dead for some time, was discovered by a member of the public early this morning on the isolated coastline.

A team from Newcastle Coastguard station was sent to the scene to measure and photograph the whale and the information has now been passed to the Receiver of Wrecks, who has responsibility for dealing with whales which wash up on the shore.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has also been informed of the appearance of the whale on the shore as has Newry, Mourne and Down Council.
