Well done to Down Minors

SIR, — I wish to congratulate the Down Minor Hurling team and management on a magnificent victory over neighbouring rivals Antrim in the recent Ulster Minor Hurling final replay in Casement Park.

This has been a terrific achievement for everyone associated with the GAA in Down and a moment that the panel of players and management will remember for many years to come. In past years it has proven extremely difficult for Down to impose their presence on Antrim’s superiority in all levels of championship hurling and therefore this recent victory is quite significant for Down Hurling.

These young hurlers from across various clubs in Down have not only done themselves proud but have also injected a new belief in those younger hurlers within their GAA clubs.

As a former club and County Board Official, serving the association in Down for a considerable number of years, I am only but too aware of the excellent work that goes on within the GAA as an organisation, and certainly within the three GAA Clubs in Ards Borough — Portaferry, Ballygalget and Ballycran.

The vast majority of players involved with this major achievement in Ulster Championship hurling are based within the Ards Peninsula, with a sprinkling of players from GAA clubs scattered throughout County Down. This victory will therefore strengthen their parishes and communities in what can be difficult times for young people. It is occasions like this that rewards everyone involved with the clubs, and the many working behind the scenes, to continue with their efforts.

Yours etc.,

CLLR. JOE BOYLE,

Portaferry.
