Wall art in Downpatrick and Ballyhornan is given welcome revamp

16 September 2015

DOWN Community Arts has revamped a number of its wall murals.

The murals, originally completed around 10 years ago in the early years of the organisation, have  been brought back to life with the help of community artists and local residents.

Working alongside the communities, artists developed original designs based upon themes accentuating the unique qualities of each area.

Artist Laureen Magill, with young people attending the Ballyhornan Summer Scheme, designed and painted a 15 metre colourful wall mural. ’Floral Rhythm’ is now a welcome addition to the local play park.

The ‘Ballyhornan Big Wave’ incorporated  paint, ceramics and mosaic by Alice McDaniel and Peter Surginor. Local to the area, the collaborative duo were inspired by the landscape and the famous ‘Great Wave’ print by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.  Belfast based artist David McClelland designed two striking images ‘Community Spirit’ in Marion Park and ‘Circle of Community’ in Ardpatrick. Each in his distinctive style, the murals reflect the history and sense of pride held by the residents.

In Kennedy Square residents worked with ceramicist Áine McKenna to make vibrant and textured wall tiles now in-situ in the estate.

The projects were funded through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Lottery fund, Downpatrick Community Collective and the Housing Executive.

Down Community Arts has extended thanks to Ardpatrick Residents Association, Marion Park Residents Association, Ballyhornan Summer Scheme, and the residents of Kennedy Square and Ballyhornan.
