Victor picks up top award

28 May 2014

THE curtain came down on a busy and successful East Down Churches Table Tennis League season with the well supported annual presentation dinner held in the Masonic Hall, Crossgar.

Following the meal supplied by Hilltop Catering, awards won by teams and individuals were presented by league chairman, Derek McCann.

As usual, there were special award winners and Victor Edgar was a most surprised and also delighted winner of the player of the year accolade after he had beaten all the number one players during the season, bar Joe McConville.

Having won all his singles games, Annahilt Scouts’ Kyle Graham was selected as young player of the year. It’s always nice to be known as a good sport and St. John’s Charlie McGrath was a popular recipient of the sportsman of the year trophy. Banbridge player Arnold Morgan was selected as the most improved player.

For the fantastic job that the handicap team of Jimmy Sterling, Michael Carey and Will and Stanley Young did on the league and cup handicaps, having ensured so many close matches, they edged out Kilmore Parish as the team of the year.

One of the highlights of the season was the charity match when a selected team from the league played Annahilt Scouts who were celebrating their 60th anniversary.

A total of £500 was raised and on Friday league president Stanley Young presented this amount to Marie Clarke, wife of the late Windsor Clarke, who sadly passed away a short time after the match.

The money raised is to go to the Lisburn Care Home and the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice and the Clarke family wish to express their thanks to all who supported the event or gave donations to towards this fantastic amount.

During the evening, the league chairman paid tribute to Windsor Clarke who played for St. John’s and also to Dr. and Mrs. Sterling, parents of the late league treasurer, Jimmy Sterling, who passed away recently.

Thanks goes to Margaret Whyte for organising the meal and also for the use of the hall.
