Under starter’s orders for the Ballynahinch Lions 10k race

5 April 2017

THE 2017 Ballynahinch Lions Club 10k race and 5k fun run will take place on Saturday, April 22.

The 10k race, which is being supported by Phoenix Gas, begins at 1.30pm, while the 5k run run, which is being supported by Gordons Chemists, sets off an hour later.

This year the Lions Club is begin joined by the newly-formed Saintfield Striders club as event partners.

As usual the races start in High Street in the town centre and move through Church Street, Church Road, Spa Road and the beautiful Montalto Estate to the finish at the Eagle Gates on the Dromore Road.

Competitors may enter online at www.athleticsni.org,  at Ulster Property Sales Main Street, Ballynahinch Community Centre, or at Tim Martin, Main Street Saintfield.

There is an earlybird’ discount entry for the 10k race until this Friday, April 7. Late entry is also available on the morning of the race at The Square from 11am to 1pm.

The Lions appreciate the many businesses in and around the town who have sponsored this year’s event.

Prize money totals £1,400 — £900 for the 10k and £500 for the 5k. There will be prizes for the top three in the male and female categories in both races, plus veterans 40+, 50+ and 60+ in the 10k. All 10k competitors will receive medals.

Once again there will be a 10k mixed team competition, comprising five men and five women

per team, with the top three of each to count.

The course has been remeasured — exactly 10k with no steps — and the 10k will be chip timed.

A Lions spokesman said: “Everyone is welcome. If you are not a 10k runner please feel free to walk the 5k.”

After the race there will be refreshments in the Market House for all 10k competitors, with presentations to all winners at approximately 3.30pm.

As in previous years the beneficiaries will be various Lions charities and Cancer Research.
