Trafficking evil destroys lives

SIR, — This Thursday, March 8, is International Women’s Day. For some women, here in Northern Ireland it will be another day of violation brought about by their being trafficked for sexual exploitation. There are more than 80 brothels known to the PSNI across Northern Ireland and February saw the first prosecution here of a businessman for trafficking and there are another four cases currently going through the justice system.

At present, the PSNI know of 26 women who have been the subject of trafficking, mostly for sexual exploitation, but this is considered only the tip of an iceberg as such crime goes largely unreported and unsuspected.

Human trafficking destroys individuals and is a violation of their human rights. Victims live in fear, are discriminated against, unpaid, and are unable to access health and other services.

Tackling these issues is complex and needs a joined up approach of government and non-government agencies.

Amnesty Mid-Down Group’s next meeting is on Thursday, April 5, at 8pm at the Ballydugan Mill, Downpatrick. Existing and non-members welcomed.

Yours etc.,

PHILIP NYE,

Chairman,

Mid-Down Group,

Amnesty.
